Relax Under the Summer City Stars with NYC Outdoor Movies
The Relaxing Summer Tradition of NYC Outdoor Movies
Summer brings the city to life like no other time of year. Patios open, parks fill up, rooftop bars overflow, and projectors start rolling all across town at sundown. NYC outdoor movies are a citywide staple of the season, drawing crowds to screenings of classics and underground premieres in all five boroughs. Some have nominal admission fees, while most are totally FREE. All you have to do is pack a few snacks - maybe a salad and apps to-go from The Fourth - find a spot, and take in the show! Two of the best series to keep an eye on include:
HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival
Mondays, June 22nd-August 24th
6th Avenue & 40th Street
The most popular outdoor movie series in the city kicks off in Bryant Park with Ghostbusters on June 22nd. The lawn opens at 5pm, and the feature starts with a vintage Warner Brothers cartoon after sunset, usually between 8-9pm. Other noteworthy screenings include The Killers (June 29th), Footloose (July 27th), and Chinatown (August 17th).
Rooftop Films 2015 Summer Series
Now through August 22nd
The only series dedicated to screening "Underground Movies Outdoors," this cutting-edge summer fest features tightly curated films from lesser-known independent artists, uniquely paired with venues in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Many are New York, U.S., or world premieres, ranging from FREE to $15 for admission, and followed by in-depth Q&A sessions with the filmmakers. Short film programs like Sundance Shorts (June 4th), High Jinks (June 17th), and Dark Toons (June 20th) are true festival highlights.
