Saturday, May 2nd
Whitney Museum of American Art
99 Gansevoort Street
To honor the opening of its striking new Downtown Manhattan home, the Whitney Museum of American Art is throwing an entirely FREE, all-day block party on Saturday, May 2nd. Hands down one of the most anticipated NYC things to do this spring, festivities include interactive performances, artist booths, workshops, live music, and free admission to all the museum's exhibits until 10pm. The menu of all-ages fun guaranteed to entertain ranges from puppetry and dance, to poetry, map-making - and even karaoke! The museum's Meatpacking District home is full of delicious restaurants, food trucks and vendors, so onsite nourishment will be limited to food for your creative spirit provided by the following artists / performers:
Ei Arakawa & Shimon Minamikawa
Cyber Café & Digiscope Paintings
These two profound artists marry their work with improv from the audience. Paintings by Minamikawa swallow the scene on the museum's 6th floor outdoor terrace, along with Cyber Café Painting Tables to create your own masterpieces.
Bed-Stuy Love Affair
Bearing the name of a famed Brooklyn neighborhood, this unique mobile exhibition is housed in a 1978 RV, here embodied in the form of a gate installation to welcome people to the Block Party.
Whitney Idol Karaoke
Designed by an artist who projects videos onto sculptures and obscure objects, visitors are invited to sing karaoke songs in this specially immersive space inspired by the breadth and unifying vision of the Whitney collection.
